Letter to the Editor

Asay, McNally stay informed on important Bernards Township issues.

Oct 18, 2021

TO THE EDITOR:

I’ve been a resident since 1999 and registered Democrat since I was 18 years old, and I’m voting for Jennifer Asay and Andrew McNally for the Bernards Township Committee.

Let me tell you why.

It’s not only our right, but it's our civic responsibility to stay informed about our local government and important issues facing our town like taxes, debt, land use and the environment.

That’s why I’ve attended almost every Township Committee meeting for the last 15 years. There’s no substitute for being there. Especially if you want the voters to elect you to the Township Committee.

Which brings me to my point. I’ve seen Republican Asay at most meetings since she became a candidate, as well as McNally, too. They’ve both participated during public comment with thoughtful suggestions and questions for the Township Committee.

Now that Andrew is on the committee, he’s doing a great job, by the way. I've also seen both of them at other meetings, for example Ms. Asay at the Board of Health and Planning Board meetings and Mr. McNally at the planning and library board meetings.

I've never seen Democrats Jessica Simpson-Cook and Sophia Chadda at Township Committee meetings. If they can’t even be bothered to attend the meetings and I'm just talking about the Township Committee meeting, how would you expect them to be responsible to go to the many sub-committee meetings that they would be assigned to as a member of the Township Committee for the next three years?

Many times these sub-committee meetings bring information that is not always mentioned at a Township Committee meeting, but they are important to the township to run smoothly.

There are zoning, planning, library, environmental, health, sewage authority, emergency management and agriculture committee meetings to name a few, but there are many more.

I find it frustrating to read about complaints of how the township is run, how the township isn't transparent or how high the taxes are, but these complainers don't bother to come to a township meeting to express themselves or even offer a suggestion or an idea to make Bernards Township a better place to live.

If someone had a suggestion or idea, why would they want to keep it to themselves? Both Jen and Andrew have stepped up, and for that I thank them.

I urge Bernards Township voters to elect Asay and McNally. They actually know what’s going on.
