TO THE EDITOR: As a 54-year resident of Basking Ridge, I write in strong support of the re-election of Mayor Jennifer Asay and Committeeman Andrew McNally to the Bernards Township Committee.
I have lived in Bernards Township since 1971. Bernards Township has changed dramatically since I moved here. Despite its growth, Bernards Township has been and continues to be a desirable place to live and raise a family.
Of course, development has been on the mind of township residents. I believe that Mayor Asay and Committeeman McNally have led the township in balancing development in a responsible way, including managing affordable housing mandates.
With the support of their colleagues on the Township Committee, they hired an experienced, certified town planner to address the state’s affordable housing mandates. Over the course of the past year, the mayor, township officials and planner have been developing strategies to ensure that these mandates do not produce destructive overdevelopment.
This has all been done in an open dialogue with the community. At a special event held at Town Hall convened by the mayor earlier this year, the planner and the mayor educated residents on the state’s affordable housing obligations, Bernards’ approach to handling them and engaged the public in their questions.
I strongly encourage you to re-elect Mayor Asay and Committeeman McNally to continue this smart, fiscally conservative approach to managing Bernards Township and, in particular, controlling overdevelopment.
